【西粟倉小学校】6年生英語 ジェームズさんと６年生の文化交流！〈実施報告〉

西粟倉小学校の6年生の英語の授業に、特別なゲストがやってきました！村に滞在中の南アフリカ出身のエンジニア・クリエイターである、ジェームズさんです。

授業の始まりは、6年生からの温かいウェルカムスピーチでした。子どもたちはこれまで学習してきた英語を活かして、西粟倉村の紹介や、「村にこんなものがあったらいいな」という自分たちのアイデアを一生懸命英語でジェームズさんに伝えました。

続いて、ジェームズさんから生まれ故郷である南アフリカについて紹介してもらいました。スクリーンに映し出された美しい大自然や、人類の起源にまつわる長い歴史、そして12もの公用語が存在する多様な文化のお話に、子どもたちは興味津々。一方で、かつてあったアパルトヘイトなどの人種差別の歴史や、ネルソン・マンデラさんの闘いといった世界の厳しい現実にも触れ、児童たちは真剣な表情で静かに聞き入っていました。

紹介の最後、ジェームズさんから「いつか南アフリカに行ってみたい？」と問いかけられると、教室内は一気に盛り上がりました。「行ってみたい！」「修学旅行は南アフリカにしよう！」という声が飛び交い、「バッファローやゾウを見てみたい！」と目を輝かせる子どもたち。ジェームズさんから「実際に野生の動物に触れられる場所もあるよ」と教えてもらうと、「えーっ！」と大きな歓声と驚きの声が上がっていました。

後半はお互いの質問タイムです。子どもたちはALTのマイケル先生や英語科担当の大恵先生のサポートを受けながら、「何歳ですか？」「サッカーはよく見ますか？」「日本以外にはどこに行きましたか？」など、英語での質問に緊張しながらも挑戦しました。「ポケモンは好きですか？」といった質問も飛び出し、ジェームズさんから英語で返ってくる答えに、「あっ、今これ言ってた！」「なんとなく意味がわかった！」と、聞き取れた単語から意味を推測して喜ぶ姿がとても印象的でした。

そんな中、「どうして西粟倉村に来たんですか？」という質問が投げかけられました。ジェームズさんは「今ホストしてくれているチャールズ・ヒロミさんのことを両親から紹介してもらった。それに、西粟倉を英語で紹介している動画を見て、この村の百年の森林構想がとても魅力的だと思ったからだよ」と答えてくれました。子どもたちは「えーっ！」と驚きながらも、目を輝かせながら「百年の森林構想ってそんなにすごいんだ…」とつぶやく様子も見られました。自分たちが普段の総合学習などで当たり前のように学んでいる西粟倉村の取り組みが、遠く離れた世界の人にも届いていて、さらに「魅力的だ」と言ってもらえたこと。その事実は、子どもたちの心に大きな誇りと、新たな自信を育んでくれたようです。

言葉が違っても、伝えたい、知りたいという強い気持ちがあれば心は通じ合う。ジェームズさんとの出会いを通じて、子どもたちにとっての「世界」の距離が、ぐっと縮まった素晴らしい時間となりました。

[Bridging Cultures through English: 6th Graders’ Cultural Exchange with James from South Africa! ]

A special guest arrived at the 6th-grade English class at Nishiawakura Elementary School! It was James, an engineer and creator from South Africa who was staying in the village.

The class began with a warm welcome speech from the 6th graders. Utilizing the English they had learned so far, the children did their best to introduce Nishiawakura Village and present their creative ideas for “things we wish the village had” to James in English.

Next, James introduced his home country of South Africa. The children were fascinated by the slides showing beautiful nature, a long history tied to the origins of humanity, and a diverse culture with 12 official languages. On the other hand, James also touched upon the harsh realities of the world, such as the history of racial discrimination under apartheid and Nelson Mandela’s struggle. The students listened quietly, their faces serious and intent.

At the end of his presentation, James asked the class, “Would you like to visit South Africa someday?” The classroom instantly erupted with excitement. Voices echoed, crying out, “I want to go!” “Let’s make South Africa our school trip destination!” and “I want to see buffaloes and elephants!” with eyes sparkling. When James told them, “There are actually places where you can touch wild animals,” a massive roar of surprise and wonder filled the room: “Whoa!”

The second half of the class was a Q&A session. With support from their ALT, Michael-sensei, and their English teacher, Ooe-sensei, the children nervously but eagerly tried asking questions in English. They asked, “How old are you?” “Do you watch soccer often?” “Which countries have you visited other than Japan?” and “Do you like Pokemon?” When James answered in English, the children joyfully picked out words they recognized, saying, “Ah, he just said that word!” and “I kind of got the meaning!” as they deduced the answers.

During this time, one student asked, “Why did you come to Nishiawakura?” James responded, “My parents introduced me to Charles Hiromi-san, who is currently hosting me. Also, I watched a video introducing Nishiawakura in English and found the village’s ‘Hundred-Year Forest Initiative’ incredibly appealing.” The children gasped in surprise, muttering with eyes sparkling, “Wow, is the Hundred-Year Forest Initiative really that amazing…?” Realizing that the village initiative they study every day in their integrated learning classes has reached someone on the other side of the globe—and that he found it appealing—seemed to spark a sense of deep pride and newfound confidence in their hearts.

Even when languages differ, hearts can connect as long as there is a strong desire to share and learn. Through this encounter with James, the distance between the children and the wider world shrank, making for a truly wonderful and memorable time.
