チェコ・プラハを拠点に活動するイラストレーター、クララ・ザフラ―ドコヴァ―（Klára Zahrádková）さん、コーディネーターの古川優月さんを迎え、Pocketにてイラスト展とワークショップを開催しました。

展示では、クララさんの最新作の絵本『エルダーベリーの木』の原画などが並び、一日限定の開催ながら村内外から多くの方が足を運んでくださいました。来場者は、クララさん本人から作品に込められた物語の説明を受けたり、自分たちが感じたことを直接伝えたりと、アートを通じた対話を楽しむ姿が見られました。子どもたちも絵の一枚一枚に「ここで何が起こったのかな？」と友達とおしゃべりしながら鑑賞したり、一人の世界に入って何度も繰り返し作品を見つめたりと、それぞれのペースでチェコのアートを堪能していました。

ワークショップは、まず「チェコってどこにあるんだろう？」という探検からスタート。世界地図を広げ、本を見ながらチェコの観光地や特産品についてクララさんと一緒に学びました。

続いて、クララさんの絵本『馬と蛇 / The Horse and the Snake』をチェコ語で読み聞かせ。馬と蛇という全く異なる二人が、人生の始まりからずっと共に暮らし、旅をしたりするお話です。聞きなれない言葉の響きに、子どもたちは古川さんの通訳を解しながら、前のめりになって物語に聞き入っていました。

メインの活動では「もしも、自分の好きな動物が、自分とは全く違う何かと一緒に住むとしたら？」というテーマで想像を膨らませました。特に柴犬が大人気で、「柴犬×イルカ」や「柴犬×ゲームキャラクター」など、自由な組み合わせが続出。オオカミやネズミ、さらには架空の動物まで、それぞれの特徴を考えながらワークシートに絵や文章で表現していきました。最後には、「色んな動物が一緒に住むところを想像しながら描くのが面白かった！」と、感じたことをクララさんに笑顔でシェアしてくれました。

アーティストがPocketに滞在し、どのように作品が生まれるのか、その人生の一端に触れる経験は、子どもたちにとって大きな刺激になったはずです。今後も、アーティストの情熱や多様な価値観に触れられる機会を、Pocketで作っていけたら嬉しいです。

An Artist from the Czech Republic Visited Us!

We had the pleasure of hosting Klára Zahrádková, an illustrator based in Prague, Czech Republic, along with coordinator Yuzuki Furukawa, for an illustration exhibition and workshop at “Pocket.”

The exhibition featured original drawings from Klára’s latest work, The Elderberry Tree. Despite being a one-day-only event, many visitors from both inside and outside the village joined us. It was wonderful to see visitors enjoying a dialogue through art—listening to Klára explain the stories behind her work and sharing their own impressions with her. The children enjoyed the Czech art at their own pace; some chatted with friends about what was happening in each piece, while others sat quietly, immersed in the artwork for a long time.

The workshop began with an exploration: “Where is the Czech Republic?” We looked at a world map and books to learn about Czech tourist spots and local specialties together with Klára.

Next, Klára gave a reading of her picture book, The Horse and the Snake—a story about a horse and a snake, two very different beings, living together as a couple from the very beginning of their lives and traveling together. While listening to the unfamiliar yet beautiful sounds of the Czech language, the children leaned in eagerly, following the story through Yuzuki’s interpretation.

For the main activity, the children used their imagination to explore the theme: “What if your favorite animal lived together with someone very different from themselves?” Shiba Inus were particularly popular, leading to creative combinations like “Shiba Inu x Dolphin” or “Shiba Inu x Game Character.” From wolves and mice to mythical creatures, the children expressed the unique characteristics of each pair through drawings and stories on their worksheets. At the end, they all shared their thoughts with Klára with big smiles, saying things like, “It was so interesting to imagine and draw different animals living together!”

Having an artist stay at Pocket and experiencing how their work is created must have been a great inspiration for the children. We hope to continue creating opportunities at Pocket for people to experience an artist’s passion and diverse perspectives.
